‘Wat is 5 times 5?’
‘5 times 5….eh…25’
‘And 3 times 2?’
‘6’
‘So, that’s how I got the answer, 6:25.’
I explained to my student, a maths question on area and ratio.
I quickly flipped over the rough paper, not giving her a chance to copy my workings.
‘Alright, do your corrections now.’
She looked at me, startled.
‘But teacher….i don’t understand..’
i almost wanted to roll my eyes.
Of cus she dun understand.
She’s in la-la land for the past few minutes.
‘But I have already explained it to you and you’ve been nodding all the way!’
She gave me a guilty look.
‘Try.’ I insisted
She looked down at the paper, frowning in concentration, trying to recall what I just taught.
Hah! Let her think, let her brainstorm. She deserved it, for not listening to me.
A few minutes passed and I looked up.
Blank.
Hah! I’m secretly pleased.
Let her suffer. I am
soooooo not going to help her.
I took out my hp and looked at the time.
Darn.
20 minutes till tuition ends.
I wanna go home.
But i still have a few more problem sums to go through with her.
And by this rate we are going, im going to do free OT
again.
‘Not listening to me right? I’m going to explain one more time and can you please pay attention?
Why cant you student just stay focus and listen to us teachers?
This will save time, save my energy repeating to you, save your energy paying attention to me and both of us can end lesson on time. And most of all, I don’t have to repeat and repeat and repeat like a broken tape recorder. Simply tell us if you dun understand. We can try a hundred different ways to explain. But never, never let us repeat. Repeating is boring.
I took a deep breathe and started all over again.
But a lot faster this time round of cus.
